Inductive Proximity Switch: Shielded vs. Unshielded

Shielded or Unshielded?

When you select an inductive prox switch, you'll need to determine a body style and size. This will be determined by space considerations and how much sensing range you need. The shielded sensing pattern (represented above left) differs from the unshielded sensing pattern (represented above right) in two ways. One, and the obvious thing, is that the unshielded sensor has a more powerful sensing range. But also note that the more powerful sensing pattern of the unshielded switch results in "side sensing". This is only a problem if you intend to flush mount the prox switch in a metal frame. It won't work, because the "side sensing" characteristic of the unshielded switch will pick up the metal frame. The straightforward sensing pattern of the shielded prox prevents this from happening. If you're mounting the prox in free space, you can pick up extra sensing range by using the unshielded switch.
