Fiber Optics

Fiber Optics

Almost every family of sensors offers a fiber optic version in either glass fibers, plastic fibers, or both. The image at left is a bifurcated fiber, where both fiber strands join into a single, bifurcated fiber most commonly used in diffuse mode at close range. Individual fibers are applied in opposed mode.

Range

Opposed fiber pairs are often used at close range, but they are available in ranges of 20 ft and up. Bifurcated fibers are generally used at very close range in diffuse mode. Lens are available to increase sensing distance.

Space

One of the great benefits of fiber optics is their inherent ability to bend. You can wrap them around conveyor frames, posts, whatever, to get them anywhere you want them to go. Plastic fibers are so flexible that you can literally wrap them around your finger.

Environment

Fiber optics are a good answer when sensing in hostile environments. You can wash them down, and significantly, you can apply them in applictions where heat is an issue. Fibers can withstand temperatures that standard sensors cannot even apporach. Whereas 158 degrees, or thereabouts, is the highest temperature most sensors can withstand, even standard, off the shelf fibers can withstand temperatures of 300 degrees. Options are readily available for 600 degrees and even 900 degrees. Nothing else comes close.

Much Favored

Compared to all the advancements made in sensor technology through recent years, fiber optics seem like old technology. But they remain very much in favor in plants where heat, washdown, and the need to detect hard to reach targets are a priority. When you combine any of those factors, fiber optics sometimes are the only answer.

Custom Fiber Optics

Fiber optics can be ordered in almost any configuration and at any length. Flat lens, multiple lens, you name it. If you can imagine it, they can probably be made. Custom fibers can be purchased with surprisingly good lead times.
