Diffuse Mode, Background Suppression:

Background Suppression

Although convergent beams focus all their sensing power at a fixed point, there are nevertheless many applications that require such resolution that even a convergent sensor is unreliable. One such example is the animation at left. In this application we are faced with a wafer-thin metallic target residing on an equally metallic background. Applications like this one could be solved only with lasers only a short time ago. Today background suppression sensors can be applied quite reliably to very difficult applications where there is almost no contrast between the target and the background, or even where the target is less reflective than the background.

Precise Cutoff

Background suppression sensors allow direct detection of objects within a defined sensing field, while completely ignoring reflective objects beyond the cutoff point. The cutoff point for these sensors can be amazingly precise.
